Description:
The U.S. Virgin Islands 2007 simplified land cover classification product represents the U.S. Virgin Islands GAP 2007 land cover crosswalked and recoded to produce a simplified land cover product representing eight major land cover types. The simplified land cover types include: Forest, Woodland and shrubland, Grasslands, Natural barrens, Built-up surface, Inland water, Forested wetlands and Non Forested wetlands. The original U.S. Virgin Islands 2007 land cover was based primarily on Earth Observing-1 (EO1) Advanced Land Imager (ALI) imagery acquired between April and September 2007. ASTER and Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery from 2007-2009 provided missing data due to cloud and cloud shadow. An unsupervised Self-Organizing Map (SOM) Neural Network classification formed the initial land cover map. A number of ancillary layers refined the land cover into a detailed land cover with 49 classes at a spatial resolution of 10m by 10m. To create the simplified land cover the original USVIGAP 2007 land cover was recoded from 49 classes into 8 classes.
